UNCLE Studios continues to bring his new artistic vision forth, detailing a 6-inch tall "Omen" and a 3-inch tall "Blink Omen" into the pictured "Shock & Awe" set. Covered with the subtle colorations of the galaxy, the larger of the two — "Shock"— stands 13-inches tall after all of the artist's modifications, the two moon/asteroid shapes he has for eyes reflected in the similarly styled spheres that can be hung from his specially sculpted antlers. "Awe", on the other hand, stands 4½-inches tall with his budding growths, which we imagine can still be seen at night thanks to this figure's glow-in-the-dark eyes! Both with chromed beaks and feet, this set of stunning pieces are available now in the UNCLE Studios online shop for $700. But bear in mind that these are hand-painted and modified originals, so it is first come, first served!

Corlen Kruger - Pleased to eat you!!!

Being sent a piece of work to look at that needs more than one look, is always a bit of a pleasure and something a little off the regular Art Toy radar is also a joy to behold. When I was contacted by an artist from South Africa called Corlen Kruger, I was delighted as he is an artist I had tracked down recently after seeing some of his 2D work earlier this year.

Corlen offered me the opportunity to review one of his new Zombie busts and said he would get something in the post as soon as he could. The Zombie bust arrived a couple of days ago and the first thing that catches my eye is the artwork on the box. There are MANY many clever words to describe the artwork on the box I am sure, but basically I think it’s retro and cool and that’s where I am going to stay for now - you make up your own mind how you want to describe it. The first of the Zombie heads Corlen sent (which is the one which ships in the box usually, there was another one in this box...more on that one later) is around 22cm (9” ish) tall and is totally hand made, the section below describes in the artist's own words the process of creating his Zombie heads.

“I sculpt them in Casteline wax for maximum detail, then make a silicone mold and they are then shell casted in F16 urethane resin to capture all the detail. The core of the sculpt is filled with polyurethane expandable foam, to give its light weight but still make it strong and rigid. I then paint them with acrylics and seal the paint job with artists spray varnish , the gloss of the eyes, teeth  and wounds are done with clear epoxy mixed with resin pigments. The base is a Forex foam board and a UV printed black acrylic base plate to finish off the piece.” This Zombie is a stunner and the work the artist has put into the piece is quite remarkable, when you consider the price he is charging, how long this price will hold when people realise the quality and originality of these pieces is anyone's guess but I would suggest buying soon if you can. This piece also feels good in the hand (which is important to me, I like to fondle my art) and the light weight comes as a surprise compared to other pieces a similar size - which is a consequence of the process the artist uses to create these pieces.

The next piece Corlen sent me to look at is a “Mini Sculpt Office Zombie Bust” - which for the Art Toy market is a bit more regular fare coming bagged (15cm - 6” high) with a stunning custom header card. Being who he is this guy understands intuitively the right points to strike for a Zombie sculpt with a sense of humour while retaining the chill factor. His traditional 2D work is regularly inspired by a fusion of retro, comics and grindhouse and that has translated over very well to his latest 3D sculptural work.

This piece is funny and has some real pedigree to the sculpt and the paint work. To be honest I have been a bit zombied out over the past few years and a lot of the Zombie work I see leaves me completely ambivalent, but this guy’s work has something else - and I think I know what it is. Over and above everything else Corlen Kruger’s work is really REALLY eye catching and DAMN funny.
The execution of the pieces he sent me for review is incredibly slick and professional and I see no reason that the work he has planned in the future will be just as slick and desirable. There is more planned and if you're a fan of shlock movie horror and like your Art Toys with a little something out of the weird cupboard, then Corlen Kruger is an artist you need to keep an eye on. - Taken from his website - “Corlen wears his love of crazy ‘exploitation’ and schlock-horror cinema on his sleeve, and its influence on his sumptuous work is clear”.

El Hooligan's Batman-based "Bat-Bat" Custom Dunnys Available Now!

Méxican artist El Hooligan has done it again, creating a stunning series of modified and hand-painted 3-inch Dunnys. Titled "Bat-Bat", this blind boxed micro series features six customs, each modeled after a different Batman design from throughout the years! Stunning interpretations with wings instead of arms, I especially love how all of them are vampire Bats as opposed to strictly human… it's like the multiverses merged and all the Batmen had to fight, after being infected by the Red Rain one.

Available now and limited to only one handmade figure in each design, those interested should email elhooliganarttoy@gmail.com to reserve their copy (or copies) of these $130 apiece bling boxes. Worldwide shipping is included, so there are no hidden costs here… Just let the artist know where to send the PayPal invoice and your blind(s) will be held! Now let's look at the six figures…

Left: "Beyond" is based on the Batman Beyond, or Batman of the Future, television series. Airing from 1999 to 2001, this animated version by Paul Dini & Bruce Timm depicted the young man that picks up the Batman mantle from Bruce Wayne in 2019.
Middle: "Sovietic" is modeled after Batmankoff, the Bruce Wayne alter ego in the Superman: Red Son storyline. This Russian Batman is essentially a terrorist, hell-bent on destroying the communist party.
Right: "Flashpoint Paradox" is the Batman from the Flashpoint crossover event, an alternate timeline in which — spoiler alert — Bruce Wayne is murdered by the robber instead of his parents, leaving Thomas Wayne to take up the mantle to avenge his son.

Left: "Shangai" is the Batman of Shanghai, shown through a series of three animated shorts presenting a unique re-imagining of the Batman universe in a heavily stylized form, set in a 1930's era Shanghai.
Middle: "'66" refers to 1966, the year in which the Batman television show starring Adam West began airing. Showing the classic and simple costume from the series, the eyebrows are a perfectly iconic element!
Right: "TDKR" stands for The Dark Knight Returns, the iconic Frank Miller storyline which — among others — began the modern look and feel of the Batman character in the comics.

Fans of horror-themed designer toy visionary Aaron Moreno of Retroband Toys know that he doesn't normally offer unpainted versions of his soft vinyl figures to be sold, preferring to focus on making hand-painted works of art out of the forms. That said, made to match the recent unpainted black "GRISTLE" figures, Moreno is offering a limited number of unpainted black "MEATS" pieces from two different forthcoming shows. These will be available from Austin, Texas's "Vulgaris Mortem" exhibition, which we announced here and Moreno will be present for, as well as the upcoming FUCKAIJU showcase! Good luck to all that want one of these 12-inch tall beauties, as they've rapidly become grail items for many fans!

The twelveDot designed "Incognito" 5-inch tall Dunny is one of my favorite Kidrobot releases this year. Not only is the Dunny proper cleanly transformed into a tiny bug within twelveDot's "APO Frog" world, but it uses a soft vinyl helm and handheld faux arms to disguise itself as… an "APO Frog"! Getting my hands on not just the "regular" chocolate chip colored version and the ultra-limited "Firefly Edition", I'm thrilled to share my thoughts on these and the history of twelveDot through a new video review!
